The Legs Project
In Association with Route79

Welcome to the Legs Project. This site is dedicated to bringing together "leg" photos that have been consigned to digital camera graveyards all over the world. In this gallery, these photos undertake dramatic transformation from the unwanted individual bits of junk that they were into a stunning, collective photographic art-form.

What's the big idea?

Actually, the idea is not original. It is inspired by Heather Champ's Mirror Project. The idea is that you submit pictures in accordance to a theme (in this case legs) and they will be displayed right here. As more and more people discover this project, more and more pictures will be displayed - and more and more people will look for innovative ways in which to capture photographs of legs. This idea has the potential to take the Internet by storm! The intention is to make this the next "Killer App".

Why Legs?

Well - again - this is inspired partially by Heather Champ - but this time not by her Mirror Project - but her photographic blog page called Harrumph! I have been following these pages of hers for quite some time now - and I always admire her pictures. I am always amazed at her competence in taking such fantastic pictures. In an attempt to work out the secrets of her talent - one day I noticed that there was something that many of her pictures had in common: they were almost always pictures of people's legs! Yes: people's legs. And in a flash of genius it just occured to me that this was a remarkable co-incidence - because I had a folder full of "junk" clips on my hard drive. Clips of photos that I had downloaded from my digital camera. Photos that I didn't want because they were aborted or test shots. Photos that I would have otherwise deleted completely. PHOTOS THAT WERE ALL OF PEOPLE'S LEGS! Just like some of those on Harrumph! Now this startled me somewhat at first - but then the obvious dawned upon me - I remember that almost all of the leg-photos that I had taken were under circumstances where I didn't have the "bottle" (bravery) to take a picture of an interesting subject (usually a person or persons) on the train, tube, bus or station platform. So, instead I ended up trying to take a "stealth" shot - which didn't quite work out - and all I got was legs! It seems that Heather Champ shares the same problem as me! And this means that I can be just as good as her!*In fact - it means that everybody in the world can finally contribute fine photographic artwork - all that is needed is an online gallery of legs!

* Heather spotted this comment and responds with: "Same problem? You're making quite a few assumptions about what I'm trying to photograph.". Hey ho - perhaps I am not so worthy after all ...

What is the art in legs?

Well - just look at some of the pictures. Imagine - as you look at them - imagine what sort of person those legs belong to. What are they thinking? Where might they be going? Can you imagine what other things that person might like just by looking at their legs? The posture, the shoes, the clothing etc. The way in which the legs are fashioned may inspire you to picture in your mind's eye all sorts of qualities about the owner of those legs. Legs can stimulate so many thoughts and fire the imagination.

This is the art in legs.

Can I submit my legs?

Absolutely - and they can be your OWN legs if you want - all you need to do is to email your pictures (legs only please) to legs@route79.com - but you MUST follow these rules:

  • After submitting your email to the above address for the first time - you will get an automatic response-reply from "mailblocks" which will challenge you to prove that you are a human being who sent the email (as opposed to an automatic spam generator). Follow the instructions to prove that you are not a robot - and your submission will be sent into the "not spam" folder at the Legs Project gallery.

  • Include in your email a one-liner description - but not on top of the image - just separately in the email.

  • Include your own homepage/blogpage URL if you have one. (Again - do not superimpose this on the image - it destroys the artistic quality). All pictures will be acknowledged.

  • Be sure to state when and where you took the picture - and the name of the person(s) the legs belong to if you know they wouldn''t mind.

  • All images will be resized to 480 x 360 pixels if they are larger than that - so don't send anything bigger please.

  • Make sure it's JPEG please - not GIF. (GIFs uses patented technology which may require licensing. They are OK for casual Internet users - but if this site becomes the world's hottest Internet site then the patent-holder might come after me for money.)

  • No pornography please. This is meant to be a showcase of collective art. The legs can be clothed or bare - it's entirely up to you - but anything that I think looks like it might be pornographic will not be entered into the gallery.

  • It may take the Legs Project Curator a few days to confirm that your submisison has been accepted - but please don't take it personally if your picture has not made it to the gallery after some time. This is probably because it has been deemed unsuitable for some reason. Please don't take it personally.

Now go back to the gallery.
