Winter Blues

Over the last few days I’ve read & heard some media reports about this coming Monday being, statistically, the most depressing day of the year. Frankly, I’ve been too busy to notice a low in the trajectory of moods in either myself or those around me. So busy that I don’t have any fresh pics - and I’m having to trawl through my photo archives to look for a picture to post here.

It’s always helpful at times like this to think about good things to come. Approximately, exactly 6 months ago it was the height of Summer here in London. A time when we Londoners love to go play in the park. In my opinion, London’s urban parks are the best in the world.

(Only six months to go until the height of summer.)

i am counting every single day until summer. i will honestly be able to say, i have nothing to do. i will be able to sit around in parks and enjoy them and do nothing. bliss. Posted by: Jaina on January 22, 2005 11:05 PM
Jaina - I will be doing exactly the same - i.e doing absolutely nothing - just sitting around in peace and quiet - and doing nothing. That's what going to the park is all about. So couldn't agree more! Posted by: Jag on January 22, 2005 11:41 PM
I was thinking the same thing. I just posted a picture I took outside my door at my flikr page with one shot at the same angle during the summer. Gives me something to look forward to especially right now when the entire eastern US is in the grip of blizzard. http://www.flickr.com/photos/ironsculler/ Posted by: Fritz on January 23, 2005 01:22 AM
When i lived in London I was amazed at how at the first signs of the sun Londoners would strip down and laze around in the park. Just such a contrast from Australia - where we tend mainly to laze on the beach or where there is an abundance of water. Of course since then I have become more urbanised and now I think there is nothing better than a Sunday in a beautifully manicured park with the family reading the Sunday papers. Well, for me, the coming Tuesday is going to be horrible. Not that I want to be different. Its just that I have a lot of work and a 3 hour long class that would de-energize anybody. The coming Monday, as will all Mondays to be, be relatively light for me, I hope. Summer parks - somehow seems to remind me of the English Countryside - with rolling meadows and cool air playing with the tall grasses and leaves. Probably have got to visit a Park then. Lovely photo - makes me look forwards to summer days even more Posted by: Vicky on January 23, 2005 11:54 AM
If the weather is as glorious tomorrow as it is today it should help ward off some the winter blues. Posted by: stroppycow on January 23, 2005 01:37 PM
Fritz: excellent "before and after" shots! Yes - the news reports here in London are covering the US snow blizzards big time. Hope all goes well. Also: I think I have bcome a big fan of Anjali thanks to you! I bought the "Lady A" album. It rocks. Lushlife: only the "uncouth" Londoners strip down to their flesh when the sun comes out. The more civilised of us do exactly what you would do: go find somewhere to sit and laze around and read the paper - or play football - or whatever! Looking forward to reading your food blog updates too by the way! Sat: hope your week is as stress-free as possible. When you come to London - I will be sure to take you to a park over here! Vicky: thanks! Yes indeed - looking forward to the summer! Strop: Yes - I agree - the brightness of the sunshine today was almost painful. (I had to close the curtains at one point!) I hope it will be. Because other weeks worser than this are coming up for me. I sure would liket to come to London sometime, now that one of my cousin is there. Regarding the depth of field: The Depth of Field increases with zoom, as well as with focus. In the Aperture Priority mode, I just zoomed in and saw that the F value increases from 2.8F to 4F (at maximum zoom). This is actually given in the camera specifications. So the depth of field actually increases beacuase the aperture becomes smaller. Whereas, if I change the focus alone from .1m to infinity, the Aperture size remains the same, but in the picture the depth of field will increase. IT has something to do with optics. I have to read more to find out. Posted by: sat on January 24, 2005 12:55 AM
jag - I WAS on the andrew peach hsow yesterday and I DID mention YOU and your blog route 79... and told him how much I enjoyed reading it - maybe afew more people may visit ? lol....talking of summer - hot as hades here! Posted by: krissie on January 25, 2005 05:44 AM
I was considering exactly the same as well this weekend, posting a pic taken last Summer that is. Maybe I will anyway! Posted by: Brom-man on January 25, 2005 12:39 PM
Obviously I have to defend Manchester's honour when it comes to urban parks; however, the best urban park in the world is Yoyogi Park in Tokyo. It's just like I imagine San Francisco to have been in the 60s - a haven for all sorts of weirdos, oddballs, hippies, punks, 50s throwbacks, tapdancing skater kids, martial artists... It's just a place where you can be. Incredible. Posted by: Chris on January 25, 2005 10:56 PM
Sat: thanks for the explanation re DOF and the DSC-V1. Like you, I sure to mean to learn about the details of this properly at some point! Krissie: Thanks! Did you record it I wonder? Would loved to have listened in! You are so lucky to have hot weather at this time of year! Brom-man: Cheers! Great way to practise a little "escapism". Chris: Although I haven't visited it - I can absolutely imagine what you mean re the Tokyo park. Next time I'm there I will be sure to check it out! Posted by: Jag on January 27, 2005 10:47 PM
Hii.. Very nice photo!! The very coy looking kid and her cross-legged pose, not to mention the shades of pink in her dress...Was it posed for or a slice from life. Cheers MaheshC. Posted by: maheshc. on January 29, 2005 05:02 PM
Cheers Mahesh! It was kind of posed for. Playing in the park. "Quick! let me take photo of you!" So - she stands there like that and I take the pic before I think she's actually ready. Posted by: Jag on January 30, 2005 09:44 AM
I loved the way my London friends went out for a walk in a park or on a common, winter or summer. It's the only way to deal with the greyness - get out and walk. I love Hampstead Heath, Clissold Park and Clapham Common - Kew Gardens and Richmond Park too. Here in Sydney, there are some wonderful large parks as well, especially Centennial Park. http://www.cp.nsw.gov.au/aboutus/index.htm Posted by: suzoz on January 31, 2005 05:50 AM
Hi Suzoz - indeed. And Clapham Common - I used to live near there: Football in the park in the summer - perfect. I really hope to visit Oz one day ... Posted by: Jag on February 1, 2005 10:12 PM

Hi Mamatha - thanks - and great to hear from you again! Hope the little ones are good. Ye s- I've heard about how cold it can get in Minneapolis - I guess we can consider ourselves lucky over here for having such mild winters. Posted by: Jag on February 6, 2005 02:49 PM
