London Fog

I spent some time living and working in the USA a few years ago - and one thing I remember amongst the many strange comments that Americans made about London was something called “London Fog”. Yes - it is a bit bizarre really - but I am guessing that there are quite a few Americans think that the weather in London is perpetually foggy? Maybe it’s a perception obtained from films/TV-shows that are shot on location in London - e.g. documentaries about Jack the Ripper perhaps?

In any case - it actually was foggy today in London. And has been pretty much all day.

London Fog this morning.

It was those old Basil Rathbone movies that etched those foggy images into the collective imagination of the US. There was also a line of raincoats called London Fog, good ones at that. I think you call them macs across the pond. I finally bought a Cybershot Dsv-1. Thanks for the recommendation. It is alot of camera for the money, now I just have absorb all the information on using the thing

Hi Fritz - thanks for the explanation re Basil Rathbone movies. And yes - we call them “Macs”!

Glad you think that the Sony DSC-V1 is good value - it most certainly is at today’s prices! Hope you have as much fun as I have had with that wonderful camera! (And be sure to avoid using the flash as much as possible - with a steady hand it will take very sumptuous shots without flash - even in low-light conditions!)

Do you keep it set in no flash? I saw there was a symbol with flash with a line drawn through it. Have you had any luck with using the movie feature?

Fritz: Yes - I keep it set on “no flash”. I haven’t used the movie feature at all - I use a completely different camera for movies - so the movie feature on the DSC-V1 is just a feature-gimmick to me. (Apologies: I think I’ve become a “camera snob” ! )

Jag: I have also heard that it is costlier to shoot in London, so many producers prefer cheaper, and London-looking parts of places like Bristol. A fog helps in hiding the obvious cheat.

Jag: Thanks again for the help . I will let you know when I have enough substance to start a basic blog to show you some photos from this neck of the woods.

Anand: interesting explanation. So - London is seen as being perpetually foggy because of filmmakers doing it on the cheap!

Fritz: Looking forward to it!

Not so much fog as smog: everyone had a coal fire back in the old days.

David: yes - now you mention it - I seem to remember from history lessons at school that it was “smog” that characterised London in the “old days”. Although - today’s generation of kids probably associate the term “smog” with Los Angeles - or Athens - or such as like.
