This is my new phone.
And what a phone it is: GPRS/Edge, Bluetooth, Infrared Modem, XHTML Browser, TCP/IP, POP3/IMAP4 Email, VGA Camera, MP3/AAC Player, FM Radio, Video Player (with streaming), Java MIDP2.0 Virtual Machine, Alarm Clock, Calendar, Voice-activation, Voice Recorder, Colour, Tri-band, MMC memory card and Loudspeaker just to name but a few of the things that this tiny little thing can do. And I mean tiny ! This thing is barely longer than a cigarette packet! It can comfortably fit in the closed palm of your hand. Being Nokia’s latest and greatest (non-specialist) mobile phone - it’s packed with every single one of the latest features - and is a truly remarkable thing to carry around in your pocket - and includes a number of “start over” developments from Nokia.
Simply amazing. To think that only a few years ago - all that a mobile phone could do was to be a phone. Now the phone is a multi-function entertainment and computing aid that you can fit in your shirt pocket - which will work almost everywhere in the world that you might care to go.
I’ve lived with my new phone for a few days now - and I still haven’t figured out all the things it can do …

Posted by jag at June 19, 2004 08:53 PMWowowowoow.
Amazing.
Cool Stuff.
How much did you end up paying for it?
And considering its soooooo many features, what is its battery life. I mean, if you have to keep recharging it every 5 hours, it becomes useless, you are no longer mobile.
Now you dont need to carry your digital camera everywhere, I suppose this is enough.
Still, its an amazing phone.
Oh! A pity it can’t warm your lunch!
Posted by: Anand on June 20, 2004 06:13 PMwow. what games does it have?
my first nokia - 5 years ago - weighed a ton, was ugly and if it fell on your foot, you would need a cast
I agree it’s a great phone. Only the screen is a little small.
Posted by: Marcus on June 21, 2004 11:27 AMIt looks huge! ;-)
Posted by: Lisa on June 21, 2004 07:38 PMDon’t want to rain on your parade, but imho a phone should be just that. A phone.
If I want to compute, I use a computer. If I want to listen to music, I use my iPod. If I want to take pictures I use my camera. Maybe I’m just a boring old fart ;)
Anyway, enjoy your new toy ;)
Posted by: Maxx on June 23, 2004 08:47 AMThats gonna be my next mobile when my current contract runs out in Nov. Actually, I don’t use too much of other features apart from the basic stuff.. but it looks nice & appealing.
Having used Sony Ericsson T610 for the last 7 months, I am eager to see the back of it and join the Nokia club again. I luv Nokia for its user friendliness.
Posted by: Chakra on June 23, 2004 05:00 PMSat: I didn’t pay anything for it unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately!) - I ordered it through work - for work use. Not sure how much it would cost if I bought it for personal use. The battery life is excellent - have used it for Internet access, and bluetooth and games etc. for hours - and the battery still seems to have lots of charge in it. The picture quality is nowhere near as good as my Sony 5 megapixel camera though - so not sure that I will stop carrying around other gadgets yet - but give it a few years as the technology improves … :-)
Zoe: it might seem overloaded with features - but it sure is great to have such things to pass away the time on boring journeys to and from the office!
Anand: Indeed! If only it could heat up my lunch - that would be perfect! :-)
Harini: I know what you mean re older Nokia phones! The games that come with it are “Beach Rally”, “Golf” and “Chess puzzle” - which are all very good quality - but I downloaded a few more (Java games) from the O2 Games Arcade - which are even better - the quality of the games have to be seen to be believed - they are better than you might imagine: very smooth graphics and incredibly detailed! Check out http://www.o2.co.uk/games/index.html for more info on the games.
Lisa: yes - the picture makes it look real big - but in actual fact it’s tiny! Really - you could hide it in the palm of your hand!
Maxx: Understand the sentiment completely - but if you lived with this phone for just a few days you would really love to appreciate many of its features I’m sure! :-)
Chakra: yes I have used SonyE T610 - and I love this Nokia 6230 much more! I’m sure you won’t be disappointed with it! Go for it!
Posted by: Jag on June 23, 2004 11:14 PMHeh…isn’t it funny the way the angle of the photograph makes it look like an enormous brick? It’s a beautiful phone Jag.
Posted by: sue on June 26, 2004 09:44 AMCan the phone play Mp3 ringtones????? I know it’s got a music player to lisen to them but can it actually use mp3’s as a ringtone(sorry for asking twice ;-))
Posted by: Cake on June 30, 2004 12:13 PMHi Cake! Thanks for your question - the simple answer is “no” - it can’t play MP3s as a ringtone. At least I haven’t figured out how to make it do so - and there doesn’t appear to be anything in the manual that suggests that it can. Hope that helps! :-)
Posted by: Jag on June 30, 2004 01:50 PMThanks for the advice Jag, but i still seem to keep getting conflicting information on the subject, read the manual myself and it doesn’t suggest you can use mp3’s but rang the club nokia customer line and they say you can!!! plus see reviews at url below, they seem to have done it??

Posted by: Cake on July 1, 2004 09:47 AMHi Cake, yes - you’re right - I read one of the reviews that explicitly stated that you can use MP3s as the ringing tone! Now that is quite puzzling - maybe I haven’t been doing it right? I will now have to try - unfortunately I am away from home at the moment and I don’t have the capability to bluetooth an MP3 onto the phone - so I can’t try it until I get back next week. But I sure will give it another try.
Posted by: Jag on July 1, 2004 02:55 PMHi jag, let us know how you get on with your tests next week, I haven’t got one myself yet but if it can play Mp3 ringtones it will certanily help my decision to purchase one.
I’ve read the phone can have problems if the MP3 is stored on the MMC card so if you give it a go make sure the mp3 you use as a ringtone is stored within the phones internal memory!
Thanks and let me know how you get on.
Look forward to your post
Posted by: Cake on July 1, 2004 03:48 PMJag, something else to try if the Mp3’s still don’t work as ringtones,
Load the mp3 into nokia media player (Nokia Pc Suite) and then do a save as, and save it as a 3gp Audio file (*.AMR), download this file to your phone and see if it can play that as a ringtone instead.
Thanks in advance
Posted by: Cake on July 1, 2004 04:30 PMOK - Cake - will give it a go and let you know next week!
Posted by: Jag on July 1, 2004 11:50 PMJag!, got myself a 6230 on the weekend and boy do I love it, I’ve also managed to set mp3’s as ringtones! downloaded some simple mp3 sounds from the internet and transfered them to the phone, selected them as ringtones and no problem at all.
Posted by: Cake on July 6, 2004 10:08 AMHi Cake, congratulations! Yes - I also tried using an MP3 as a ringtone and it worked! Perhaps I was doing something wrong the first time I tried. I have to admit that the sound quality from the 6230 is excellent.
Posted by: Jag on July 7, 2004 11:02 AMCheers for your help jag!!
P.s the sound quality is great..
