Ealing Rodeo Drive?

I had to leave the office slightly early yesterday (Friday) afternoon. This afforded me an opportunity to gaze outside the bus window at the Route 79 communities at their liveliest and most colourful.

Some time ago I wrote about the expensive Indian/Asian fashion boutiques at the North end of Ealing Road - well having bussed past these shops twice every day for the last few years I have never seen them open for business - and I always put that down to the fact that I pass them in the morning before they are open and pass them in the evening when they are closed. Well - this time I was passing by them in the middle of the afternoon - and, apart from the telltale signs of shop assistants adjusting clothing displays - they all still looked devoid of customers. Perhaps the clothes they sell are so expensive that only handful of customers a day venture into them - or perhaps, like the expensive clothes shops in Rodeo Drive in Beverley Hills, you need to book an appointment to visit the them?

Premium fashion boutiques at the North end of Ealing Road, Wembley.
(You may notice the reflection of the bottom half of Route79 bus in the window.)

maybe the customers only come out at night? god knows

oh and on topic of the wembley arch thingie, i can see it from my house, and have to say looks spectacular, but bet those twin towers did way back then too.

Perhaps so Jaina. Perhaps these businesses thrive on only a few customers each day? Wouldn;t be surprised - as I am told that a basic Punjabi suit or lengha or sari costs several hundred pounds each!

Re the Wembley arch - yes it is beginning to rise taller each weekend (which is when they move it). You are lucky to see it from your house - I can’t - but I can see it from the top end of Honeypot Lane (Stanmore end) and I see several different views of it as the 79 bus works its way between Alperton and Preston Road. The twin towers were probably not as visible as the arch will be though.

The Asian fashion places in Manchester seem to be open until late in the evening (along with the rest of Rusholme, including the music shop which booms out the latest bhangra until 11pm most nights). Although now you come to mention it, I’ve never actually seen anyone in any of them in the five years I lived in Rusholme…

Jag, thanks for putting together such a great site. It’s my first time visiting - just linked over from Annie Mole’s site. I’ve got you bookmarked now, and will definitely be back. I love the pictures & writing but wanted to say thanks especially for the recipes. Indian food is my all time fave, and having just read your Egg Bhurji recipe, I’ve got to get some right now!

Hi Santoka - many thanks for such nice feedback! Glad you like the recipes too! Do share your experiences, tips and tricks if you try cooking some of them.

Chris: Perhaps the Asian shops in Manchester, to you, are just like in London to me: customers must go in there SOMEtime - just not when we’re looking!

Shobha: I’m just fine! Yes - the outfit in the pic looks really nice. Hope you are well and suitably refreshed from your vacation down South! :-)
