“Doing anything exciting at the weekend?“
“Well - tomorrow I’m having a lie in.“
And something like that is guaranteed to come up in conversation on a Friday afternoon in the office. It seems that to “lie in” (bed) on a Saturday morning is quite a popular thing to do. I sometimes wonder if this is a particularly British custom - or whether such a concept is institutionalised elsewhere in the world.
We often take advantage of this to enjoy the playground at the local park. Whereas at 7:30 on most weekday mornings the whole neighbourhood will be buzzing with activity - at this time on a Saturday morning the only people you will see around and in the park are those walking their dogs. And since dogs are not permitted in the children’s playground enclosure we almost always have the entire playground to ourselves.
A good couple of hours of undisturbed, uncrowded fun.

I hate sleeping through the mornings; I feel I’ve been robbed of half a day.
Today I had plenty of time to get some work done before the day’s play at the Test match started. Although I did manage to miss the first half hour. I don’t think I’ll ever get used to 1030 starts.
Posted by: Not Responding on May 22, 2004 12:55 PMHi there Not: couldn’t agree more!
I, too, could never get used to the idea of getting out of bed late on a Saturday morning. You’re absolutely right: it’s like being robbed of half a day - and if also done on Sunday is like having only one effective day off at the weekend!
Heck. Now all days are holidays for me. But I prefer getting up extremely early, and go cycling around the city, thereby avoiding heat, humidity and traffic.

Posted by: Jag on May 23, 2004 09:53 AMAh, lie-ins. I love them almost as much as wine and chocolate!
Posted by: Fi on May 24, 2004 03:22 AMNow that wouldn’t be the playground in Roe Green Park (was it called that?). If so, they’ve changed the climbing frames since my day.
I call a lie in staying in bed till 8 am these days. I’ve lost the ability to linger any longer, thanks to our brood. But 8 is fine. It’s more rest than usual and I can get the weekend shopping in before the real rush starts.
Fi: Chocolate I’m not sure about - but wine: indeed! Sometimes I need a lie-in if I’ve had too much of it the night before! :-)
David: Roe Green Park it is! I agree - 8 is fine for a “lie-in” - and is perfect to get some weekend chores done before the rest of the world does.
Posted by: Jag on May 24, 2004 08:31 PMThe sky in that photo looks lovely. Nice angle of the photo too, i can almost imagine i’m lying on the grass looking up at the sky on a perfect summer’s day. Ah, I can but dream…
Posted by: sue on May 24, 2004 11:07 PMThat’s funny. I did a post about getting up early in the morning today. You’re right. Nothing can beat the early morning hours especially during the weekend.
Posted by: Konstantin on May 25, 2004 10:59 PMSue: thanks - I was surprised how the picture cam out myself. Didn’t have to do any manipulation in Photoshop either.
Konstantin: I just saw it - great!
