Town & Back

Westminster. Jubilee Line Westbound. About 9pm.

Wembley Park. Northbound Metropolitan/Jubilee platform. Wet.

For reasons of work - I had to go down to Westminster for a couple of hours yesterday evening. It rained all the way there. And it rained all the way back home. But for the first time in ages I took a trip from home all the way into the heart of town - a trip that involved no changes of train - and involved no hassles purchasing extension tickets or excess fares. All thanks to the Jubilee Line (it goes from my neighbourhood and then right through the West End and City) and the new Oystercard prepay feature (which allows to me to provide a “miscellaneous” expenses buffer on top of my annual Zone 2,3,4 ticket).

Thanks for those. I studied in London many years ago, and I do miss the Underground*. Weird eh?

*Except when it’s being used by morons

That wet picture sums up the whole of January.

I hate Wembley Park tube as I only ever use it as a change now that the stadium has gone, and I’ve spent many minutes there waiting for a Metropolitan line train to get back home.

Vicky: No real burning desire to plug one of my other pages - but there are some other London commuting and other related pics at my attempt-to-be-arty photo gallery pages at: http://www.etongrove.com

Annie: yes - “wet” sums it up so far. “Cold” is what I’m expecting the next few weeks to be. Roll on spring …

Waiting for the Met-line at Wembley Park is an acquired taste. And it will get better when the station gets completely redeveloped in time for the stadium (apparently according to http://www.brent.gov.uk/wembley.nsf/0945c66a31c560128025684900360c5d/2db2da0b5859586a80256de90066ebe7!OpenDocument )

Thanks, Jag - what a fabulous idea!

Hi Jag,
remember how I got in here via Queensbury station? One of the joys - and one of the irritating things for my parents - back in the 60’s on our trips up to town was badgering them to change to the Metropolitan at Wembley Park and whizz up to Baker Street at top speed, missing out all those boring Bakerloo line stops inbetween. The Met trains were also bigger. No wonder they went faster.
Seeing Wembley stadium was always a highlight too.

David: you will be pleased to know that the exactly-asyou-described train-hopping still takes place at Wembley Park - although what you referred to as the Bakerloo Line is now the Jubilee Line. If I am not taking the bus into town - I get the tube at Kingsbury - go one stop to Wembley Park - and then hop onto a Met Line train all the way to Baker Street!
You can see from my pictures below that the site of the Wembley Stadium is looking very different right now. Just for you - I will take a few pics of Queensbury sometime soon!
